BRUH Print Quick Start
1. Install and grant USB
Add the BRUH repository, install BRUH Print, and start it.
The add-on needs the host’s USB device tree mapped in. That is a manifest permission the Supervisor grants when it creates the container — there is no switch on the Configuration tab, and there never was.
It only takes effect on a restart
This is the commonest “it cannot see my printer”. If the printer was plugged in, or the permission granted, after the container started — restart the add-on.
If it still cannot see it: check the power brick (a LabelWriter needs its own supply, not just USB), check the cable, and check nothing else is holding the device — a CUPS add-on will.
2. Tell it what is loaded
Open the Printer tab and say which stock is in which bay. A LabelWriter genuinely cannot report this, and it is the fact everything else depends on.
If you have a Twin Turbo, there are two bays. You will never pick one again: naming the stock has already named the bay, so there is no roll picker on the Quick tab, in the designer, on a template, on the card, or in the print services. Two ways to say where a label goes is one way to contradict the other.
3. Print something
The Quick tab is three things: say, see, do. Type a word, look at the preview, press Print.
The autofit is the product here. It does not just pick a size — it tries every way of
breaking the words across lines and takes the arrangement whose glyphs come out biggest.
Buffer A is biggest on two lines; 9912 is biggest on one. Trying a single arrangement is
what makes an autofit label look like it did not try.
Measuring your stock
Two numbers describe a label and they are not interchangeable:
- across lies across the print head
- feed travels past it
Getting them the wrong way round is the single most common way a label comes out rotated with the text off the edge — and nothing can work it out for you, because the printer feeds to the next die-cut gap and has no idea what shape the label was.
So press Print test. It prints a ruler with millimetre ticks on both axes. Measure, and if the two are swapped, the stock’s Edit dialog has These are the wrong way round as one press.
If the alignment is off
There is a print offset per stock, signed, in millimetres, on both axes. It corrects where the machine puts the paper — the label, the preview and the design canvas are untouched, because the offset is not a change to anybody’s layout.
Print the ruler, measure the margins, and enter the difference. A shift that would push real ink off the label prints anyway and comes back with a note saying how much and past which edge.
Text direction
Which way text sits on a label belongs to the stock, not the job. A 0.56 × 3.44 cryo wrap reads along the roll and a 2.25 × 1.25 label reads across it — always. So it is asked once, on the Printer tab, and nowhere else.
“Automatic” says what it decided in the closed picker (Text direction: automatic — along the roll), because a setting you cannot check without printing one is a setting people override blindly.
Two silences that mean different things
Ask the printer prints nothing; it asks the device for its status. If it says nothing came back, that is one of two things and the panel says which:
- The printer did not answer — about the printer.
- There is no channel to ask on — about the connection. The USB printer class defines a one-way protocol and a two-way one, and devices routinely expose both. On a one-way interface there is simply no endpoint to read from, and the printer is fine.
Neither is ever rendered as ready. And a one-way interface prints perfectly well — this is not a printing fault.
